It’s been odd getting international basketball in the middle of the Breakers season. Odd but pretty exciting as the Tall Blacks finally get to play some meaningful games outside of major tournaments and double headers against Australia.
It’s not about whether the Tall Blacks can win the Asia Cup at full strength, more about how many talented young players are being developed, how well funded and supported the sport is in this country, how many fans get involved… all those things.
Paul Henare may be chilling out at the NBA Summer League, scouting for those precious last couple import spots, but one glimpse at the current NZ Breakers roster as it stands for next season and there’s something that immediately catches the eye: they’re all from Aotearoa.
The Tall Blacks’ Olympic Odyssey ended on the weekend as the kiwi team went down 78-72 to Canada in the semi-finals of their qualifying tournament.
The worst case scenario was that the Tall Blacks’ hopes of making the Olympics would already be over by now.
The Tall Blacks are probably not going to make the Olympics. Like, that’s just the fact of it.
