Let Me Play Devil's Advocate...

The match fixing scandal took another confusing turn last week. Chris Cairns returned to New Zealand after heading to the motherland to clear up a few things and upon his arrival he not only continued his denial of any involvement but he kinda ramped it up.

It's all pretty weird. Cairns endured what must have been a very expensive and emotionally draining court case in 2012 to clear his name and he's now doing the same. If we hadn't sat through the staunch (sometimes bullying) denials from Lance Armstrong, Cairns would have my benefit of the doubt.

I'm 100% uncertain of who or what to believe. I'm leaning towards Cairns being somewhat guilty because a few of the facts add up AND more importantly, I get that vibe from him. There is nothing scientific about that vibe, I just get a Lance Armstrong vibe from him.

But what's if? What if Cairns isn't guilty?

These dark forces, huh? The only logical explanation I can come up with is that Cairns truly did piss off some people and these people hold considerable power ... enough power to perhaps influence players in to making statements or influence the ICC.

However, this pissing off of certain people probably took place when Lalit Modi tweeted some accusations involving Cairns. So either Cairns pissed off some people BEFORE this tweet in something totally unrelated to matchfixing - he just rubbed some people the wrong way or something - or this happened when Cairns decided to fight back. Powerful people don't like it when you fight back.

Cairns may have known he might have ruffled a few feathers, hence he was going to go to such extents to clear his name. But if you were confident within yourself and comfortable with yourself wouldn't you just deny and brush off the stupid accusations? Is there really a need to fight tooth and nail? I'm not sure how much moola Cairns has, but I know lawyers etc are preeeeetty expensive. Maybe Cairns has some backers in his own corner? Hmmm.

Part of me wants to believe Cairns. Part of me feels sorry for him, maybe he's done absolutely nothing wrong besides call the wrong person a rude name and now he's feeling the full effects of the dark force. I mean he's a kiwi, I'm a kiwi, we're all kiwis ... we're all the little guys in the title fight so while we enjoy the underdog wins, we also get shat on by the big guys. This could be that and Cairns could the victim of some big time betrayals.

The determination and extent of Cairns' denials result in three feelings - weirdness, excitement and sadness.

Excitement - "Yeah you go Cairnsy! Go get em, we love you and you're the man for standing up to this shit!"

Sadness - "Why are you acting so crazy mate? If you did it, it's ok. Your legacy will live on but you're making it hard for us to still remember the good times"

Weirdness - "Ah fuck. There's an exciting Black Caps series about to start and we're talking about Dark Forces?"

I'm not sure where this goes and to be honest I don't really care. I'm closing that book - the important people will come to their conclusions about that happened 5 years ago or whatever and life will go on. Would you rather be caught up in all this, waiting for new developments every day, waiting for the next player to be named or get amongst the current group of Black Caps?
