For years the Kiwis have lacked what Kieran Foran can offer them
Leadership by actions as well as the Manly mentality. Touches of class mixed in with a rugged, physical game that can deeply influence proceedings.
He won't win a game with a flick pass or breaking ankles, but he'll win you a game by doing everything else.
With Shaun Johnson our long term 7, and Foran our long term 6, all bases are covered.
Johnson's adapting to the weekly grind of NRL footy, where consistency and basics are the key.
This allows Foran to play his natural game - the classic but truest of all cliches. With two halves who are strong ball runners, they'll give the Aussies plenty of headaches.
With a pack of big boppers who have skill and power, Foran can be our leader, our chirper, the barker. He'll get the team following the same path.
Throw in Isaac Luke, Thomas Leuluai and a strong group of fellow youngsters, you have a team capable of consistency. But they need guidance, leadership and class ... which Kieran Foran offers in spades.
Matchup - The battle of the halves will be massive, but both teams have very different forward packs. The Roosters pack is physical whereas Manly's pack is subtle, very subtle. This will decide the game.
Each year March rolls around and I've had enough of the hype, the typical pre season talk and of course the way too many rugby stories that do the rounds ...
Chief Biggums - Robbie Farah, the current meta of the NRL is suiting his style of play with less stoppages and more action. Ran for 155 metres, set up a try and made a solid 40 tackles against a big Souths Pack.
The NSW Warriors had their first bye on the weekend. This weekend they take on the West Tigers NSW Cup team as part of the triple header in Wellington.
What's it like to be a supporter of the New Zealand Warriors? Well their win against the North Queensland Cowboys was like a 'Supporting the Warriors 101'.
Matchup - Robbie Farah vs Isaac Luke. Two players who have a huge influence on how their team performs. Farah was back to his best last week while Luke continues to show that he is definitely in the top 3 best hookers in the NRL.
There are worse things that an NRL club could do than try and copy what the Manly Sea Eagles are doing. This involves everything - the way they play their footy, their recruitment and development along with the culture they have created.
Chief Biggums: Anthony Milford. He was pivotal in the Raiders win over the Knights over the weekend setting up some of the most stylish and crucial tries for the Green Machine. His speed and footwork was a treat to watch.
I remember that gruesome night, a bit too fondly
Tragedy. Jharal Yow Yeh's career cut short by a bastard of an injury
The NSW Cup Warriors took on the Illawarra Cutters (feeder to the St. George/Illawarra Dragons) this week in the first of the triple header played at Eden Park over the weekend. The Warriors now have some points on the NSW Cup ladder despite their slow start. I hope it isn't...
I watch a fair bit of footy. I love rugby league just as I love the Warriors.
So when I see other NRL teams who rush off their line, show enthusiasm on defence, execute their imaginative attacking plays to perfection and show an intense desire to win, I get jealous.
Concussion, head trauma, whatever you wanna call it, it's the trendy topic in contact sports at the moment. We've seen former NFL players take legal action against the NFL, we've seen former NFL players take their own lives because of the damage done by multiple concussions and we're now seeing the impact that this has in our part of the world.
Matchup - This match is the battle of a celebrated forward pack of giants up against a group of forwards who don't have the big brand name but do a fine job. How will the likes of Manly's Josh Starling and Brenton Lawrence go against the Burgess clan?
Well once again it was a very tough first up performance to watch from the Warriors.
The Parramatta Eels were definitely the better team on Sunday evening and they had too much fire power and most importantly enthusiasm for our lads.
Mystery Doctor - Greg Inglis is the man. His physical play was immense and his influence on not only his lads but also the opposition is huge. Jason Taumalolo comes close for his barnstorming game against the Raiders.
The NSW Cup feeder team for the NRL Warriors has been taken over and rebranded by their first grade counterparts. The Vulcans have been replaced by the NSW Cup team known as the NZ Warriors.
Matchup - The forwards packs are impossible to ignore with both teams having a group of big, aggressive and very mobile lads to do the dirty work. I think the Bunnies have a bit more skill in their pack which could give them an edge but with SBW and Boyd Cordner on the edges, the Roosters will be able to attack through the middle and on the edge.
For the 2014 NRL season we've got a panel of lads who will share their views of the weekend's action. This week we'll look forward to the season as a whole...
