What Went Right?

  • Scoring 106 points. That oughta win it every time in this league.
  • 15/26 3pt shooting. That’s a straight up clinic. KJ, Wilko, Abo, Webster and Te Rangi all hit 3 each.
  • Finishing the game off. They’ve had trouble this season in this regard, so it was great to see the Breakers finish strong after the Hawks tied the game up with less than 4 mins on the clock.
  • Gary Wilkinson. Ol’ Bear Claws is sprinting up the FBR MVP rankings, even more surprising because he wasn’t even on the roster until Game 6. But the big fella has nestled right back into a comfortable place where he’s absolutely dominating.
  • Nobody fouled out.

What Can Be Improved?

  • Defence. Although you gotta hand it to Rotnei Clarke, who had a great game, and did so with a number of other heavy contributors on the Wollongong side.
  • Get Alex Pledger back. He was doubtful for this one, and ultimately sat it out. He’s got another week to recover now.
  • The rebounding and turnovers still have room for improvement, but they’re getting there. Not a lot else to worry about, to be honest, just gotta hope they can keep this level of performance up for the final 10 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs…

Play of the Game

A beautifully executed offensive possession (after a missed field goal) culminates in a wide open 3 pointer for Kerron Johnson, who sinks the dagger blow late on:

How It Unfolded

It’s pretty hard to see anyone beating Perth to the title this season. The past few years have been defined by the Breakers vs Wildcats rivalry, but for now there’s no competition. Perth made it 3 from 3 over NZB with a convincing win, much more so than the nail-biter in Perth last week, improving to 12-1 and dropping the kiwi team to 4-9, with the playoffs just a pipe dream for the moment.

The writing was on the wall early as the Breakers had probably their worst offensive quarter of the season to open up this game. They missed their first 6 three-pointers, struggling to assert themselves in the paint, often settling for tough jump shots or contested layups. And against a team as good as Perth, you just cannot give them that kind of leg-up. NZB didn’t get their second field goal until 1:40 to go in the opening quarter. Perth defended very well, and took their chances at the other end, opening up an early lead. The gulf in class was obvious from the start, and though the Breakers showed some much welcome fight in the second half, taking big bites out of that lead, it was too much to hold off the onslaught of James Ennis and company. Ennis’ buzzer beater to end the first half must have sent Breakers fans into melancholic fits of déjà vu. Perth had contributions from all over. Ennis had 16 pts and 5 reb, but it was Matty Knight, surprisingly, who stole the plaudits, with 15 and 9. Add in the sharpshooting of Damien Martin, Shawn Redhage and Jermaine Beal (who had an off day), and a whole lot of rebounding off the bench, and this team is as good as the Breakers have been for the past three years. At least.

For the home team, Kerron Johnson (14 pts, 4 ass, 5 reb, 2 stl) was a spark plug, and Tom Abercrombie (15 pts, 6 reb) shot well. Mika Vukona (16 pts, 7 reb) was typically efficient too. This was not a game which they were expected to win, but after a tough and winless road trip, it does sting. The Breakers defence really does need to be applauded for how well they limited Perth – keeping them to a season low of 71 overall is something to be proud of – but their own offensive troubles are worrying. Their third loss in a row drops the Breakers to last on the table. It’s time to get moving. Next up is the All Star game this weekend.

Stocks Up

Kerron Johnson. When he really asserts himself in a game, you see why he’s so highly rated. Yet Johnson has a tendency to let others step up around him. His passing game is good enough to facilitate this, though given his athleticism and dynamic ability, Breakers fans would much prefer those spin moves around the basket. Just gotta pick and choose better. Commentator Casey Frank made a valid point in the gamecast that Johnson doesn’t react well to what defences give him, making his mind up early how a play is going to go, and following it through regardless. Despite this, it was a strong effort here against Perth, never letting up and really trying to rise to the occasion. More of this, please Kerron.

Stocks Down

CJ Bruton. It’s telling that against the best team in the league, the Breakers former closer only gets 7 minutes. Plus he’s 0-9 in the past three games from 3 pt range. 3-22 of you wanna stretch that back even further.

Play of the Game

Melbourne Tigers 84-82 NZ Breakers

Another away game, another tight loss. And this was a game that was there for the taking, one that the Breakers of old would definitely have closed out. But playing their second game in 3 days, the kiwi team fell apart offensively down the stretch to lose narrowly in a game that they led for most of the second half. CJ Bruton made some history, playing in his 500th career NBL game, though it wasn’t the fairytale he’d hoped for, going 0-6 from 3pt zone, including a couple late efforts that would have been crucial.

Perth Wildcats 95-91 NZ Breakers

Perth away. The toughest fixture in any season. And it started terribly, with the Wildcats running out to an early lead. They controlled the ball well, and flayed some timid Breakers defence with a clinic in shooting. Early on in the second Perth had themselves an 18 point lead. But if you thought the three time champs would lie down you thought wrong. The Breakers managed to claw themselves back into the game, playing some very high quality basketball. A couple of dunks and some clever passes were more than highlight worthy. Perth rebounded better than NZB, as expected, and they were clever with the ball in hand, but what really kept them ahead was their three point shooting. Jermaine Beal especially was beyond incredible, hitting 8 of 15 attempts (tying a franchise record for 3pters made in a game). He finished with 30 points.

NZ Breakers 84-74 Melbourne Tigers

How It Unfolded

Mika Vukona led the way to a fairly comfortable and morale boosting win, falling two assists short of just the second ever triple double by a Breaker (Cedric Jackson had one last year). Vukona stayed out of foul trouble, yet did so without sacrificing his natural muscle and hustle, zoning in on 5 1Q rebounds. In fact as a team the Breakers rebounded superbly, an area where they’ve struggled in most games. Though as commentator Casey Frank pertinently noted, this could simply be attributed to bad defence allowing easy shots to opponents. If they aren’t missing, there’s nothing to rebound after all.

NZ Breakers 81-74 Townsville Crocs

The Breakers came away with an efficient 7 point win over the Crocs last night at NSEC. From the start they expressed an emphasis on their transition defence, where they had been leaking easy points all season. They were good for their word too, keeping Townsville to just 14 1Q points and running out to a lead which they held with varying levels of comfort throughout the game.

NZ Breakers 94-95 Adelaide 36ers

“……...” – Every Breakers fan following Gary Ervin’s last second winning layup.

It was a much improved performance, though one still littered with silly errors, and ultimately a game they should have won, but didn’t. The Breakers blew out early thanks to a couple big buckets from Tom Abercrombie, but Adelaide are a very good team, and they levelled things up quickly, with the lead changing several times in the first half, before the 36ers went on a 14-2 run late in the second and held on for a 50-46 HT lead.

Townsville Crocodiles 91-78 NZ Breakers

How It Unfolded

A tough loss in Townsville for the Breakers. The Crocs came out strong, while the kiwis took too long to get into the game with early turnovers causing trouble and their opponents looking like they couldn’t miss. Townsville quickly blew out to a 17-6 lead. Their tactics were clear from the start: they looked to trap the Breakers with a high court pressing strategy, double teaming Kerron

NZ Breakers 97-89 Wollongong Hawks - Fast Break Report

The Breakers finally managed win 2 of the season, holding off a tough Wollongong side for an 8 point win. They started well, minimising the early turnovers (only 11 all game) that cost them so badly against Adelaide, and showing off the full range of their offensive options. Alex Pledger was string in the paint, and showed a surprisingly deft touch in finishing baskets, while Mika Vukona was aggressive yet disciplined, and the likes of Corletto, Abercrombie and Wilkinson showed off their jump shooting abilities. Wollongong was able to stick close though, thanks to the...

NZ Breakers 93-96 Adelaide 36ers - Fast Break Report

Ah, bollocks. Dropped another one. It was a game in which the Breakers held close, but barely controlled. Adelaide came out strong in defence and the kiwi team were made to rue a number of early turnovers and general sloppiness in possession. This is a strong 36ers side, with former League MVP Gary Ervin, import Jarrid Frye and a couple of Aussie internationals to boot. They’re not to be taken lightly and they proved it.

NZ Breakers 89-96 Perth Wildcats - Fast Break Report

The Breakers lost their third game in a row for the first time since 2010. This one was nothing to be ashamed of however. Perth is definitely the team to beat in 2013, and they proved it with a dominating performance away to the defending champs. The Breakers flew out to a 9 point 1st Quarter lead, but in the 2nd Q Perth’s sharpshooters really stepped up. The talk was all about James Ennis...

Cairns Taipans 86-85 NZ Breakers - Fast Break Report

Ah, so close! It all came down to the final play, Kerron driving towards a crowded basket, kicks it out to a wide open CJ Bruton, who’s misses the defining shot, and the Breakers go down by 1. It was always gonna be tough playing back to back, but the Breakers competed well early. The first half was a bit of an arm wrestle, with a lot of fouls, just as we saw last game. The kiwi team...

Townsville Crocodiles 94-84 NZ Breakers - Fast Break Report

The momentum of their opening win didn’t last long, as the Breakers dropped their first game on the road, in a performance punctuated by sloppiness. They held strong for two quarters, taking the half time lead after a long rage buzzer-beater from Kerron Johnson. But in the third the kiwi team fell apart, scoring just 13 points. With main rebounding threats Mika Vukona and Alex Pedger spending...

NZ Breakers 92-76 Wollongong Hawks - Fast Break Report

Despite a number of new names (including new coach Dean Vickerman), and without 2013 League MVP Cedric Jackson, who’s off to try his luck in Europe, among others, this was a typically clinical win from the 3 time defending champs. The first quarter was a close affair, but the fabulous Breaker boys established a lead in the second and never looked like giving it up. Daryl Corletto (19pts 4ass)sparked a 19-6 second quarter run with some lights-out shooting from...
