Black Caps Black Book ... /Diary - Be Careful Of What You Wish For
Scotland, worthy of their World Cup position and worthy of praise, but the over reaction to an apparently faulting Black Caps batting line up was funny.
First of all, the groan of the crowd as it became known that the Black Caps would bowl first was disgusting. The Black Caps aren't there to put on a show for you, to make you feel vindicated for watching a cricket game, no, they're there to simply win games. How those wins come about, is irrelevant as this is the World Cup people.
It's win, or be a looser.
Do we want the Black Caps to play nicely, or do we want the Black Caps to be ruthless?
There's only one answer that I'll accept there. So we congratulate skipper Brendon McCullum, also known as the cricketing deity NattyMac for showcasing a ruthless attitude from the jump.
That ruthless attitude was then clearly evident throughout the game. Dismissing Scotland for 142 was a great effort and every time I post my backside on the couch to watch Trent Boult and Tim Southee do what they do best, I feel content. As a kiwi cricket fan, watching two lads at the peak of their powers, combining all the different little aspects of swing bowling, it's awesome.
The fact that our wickets are coming from our best bowlers is awesome and they're simply following our #DoYourJob mindset. Daniel Vettori continues to show that he's going to be one of the best spinners in the World Cup, while Corey Anderson is the best All Rounder so far.
So we were clinical and ruthless with the ball.
We tried to be clinical and ruthless with the bat also, but it didn't quite work out the way we hoped.
We celebrate the Black Caps and their aggressive attitude, which contributed to the way the chased down that 142. Would you rather see the Black Caps try to be ruthless and stutter, but still get the job done or would you rather see then trying to find some form, batting with fear clouding their thoughts?
Ruthless. Let's be ruthless and if we can't be ruthless, let's try to be ruthless.
The Black Caps won. There's no need to look at how they almost lost, they earned the right to bat with freedom, aggression and ruthlessness by dominating with the ball.
Black Cap teams of the past would have struggled with that total. They would have been unsure of themselves, unsure of their pursuit of that smallish total and the result may have been different.
Against Scotland, there was only certainty and confidence. The result wasn't certain, but the mindset of the Black Caps was clear and they were certain about their plan. So hats off to them, these games give you a chance to stamp your mark and showcase your mindset. The Black Caps slightly missed the bullseye, but there's no complaints from me.
My MVP OG P-I-M-P is Daniel Vettori who has made the swift jump from Undercover Brother to MVP. Vettori's effort showed why spinners are always good to have as he cleaned up the tail against batsmen who are always going to struggle to judge the flight, change of pace and spin of Vettori. Quickly wrapping up the tail was a match winning effort as it chopped a few runs off the total for Scotland.
Undercover Brother, well it's the Undercover Brothers this time around. Mike Hesson and lord NattyMac obviously want to be ruthless and have rolled out what they think is their best 11 twice. With England up next, they might do the same, but they might slip Mitchell McClenaghan in or they might give Tom Latham some time at the crease. Don't forget about these lads because if they are given a run, they'll be expected to perform, to be ready, to contribute.
That's the beauty of a World Cup and the squad that we've picked #DoYourJob.
